Firearm Safety and Secure Storage

Michigan's Child Access Prevention (CAP) Law, also known as  Public Act 17 of 2023, mandates the safe storage of firearms when a minor is likely to be present. This law requires firearms to be locked and stored separately from ammunition, ensuring that keys or locks are inaccessible to children. The following details support secure firearm storage to prevent unintentional injuries or deaths. More information: Michigan Department of Education

Safe Storage Practices

Locked and Unloaded

Firearms should always be stored unloaded and locked using a gun safe, gun case, or other locking device.

Separate Ammunition

Ammunition should be stored separately from the firearm, ideally in a locked container.

Secure Storage Location

The location where firearms and ammunition are stored should be inaccessible to children and other unauthorized individuals.

Secure Lock Combination

If using a gun safe, the combination should be stored separately from the firearm and ammunition, ensuring it is not easily accessible.

Importance of Safe Storage

Preventing Accidents

Secure storage significantly reduces the risk of accidental injuries or deaths involving firearms.

Protecting Children

Safe storage ensures that firearms are not easily accessible to children who may be curious or unaware of the dangers.

Promoting Responsible Ownership

Safe storage practices demonstrate a commitment to responsible gun ownership and public safety.

Reducing Suicide Risk

Secure storage can also help reduce the risk of suicide, as it makes it more difficult for individuals at risk to access firearms.
