Advanced Placement Program
The Advanced Placement Program is an internationally-recognized program administered by the College Entrance Examination Board of Princeton, New jersey. It consists of college-level courses and exams that give high school students the opportunity to learn a subject in greater depth, utilizing analytical reasoning and disciplined study habits, and to receive advanced placement/or credit in college. Approximately 350,000 students participate in the AP Program each year.
At Garden City High School, the Advanced Placement experience consists of both the AP course and its AP exam. A commitment to both the course and the exam maximizes potential benefits to participating students. AP exams are administered in May on specified national test dates. Exams are graded on a 1-5 scale, with 5 being "extremely well qualified." Most colleges accept for credit and/or advanced placement a grade of 3, which is achieved by 2/3 test takers. Exam results are mailed to students' homes in July and released to students' colleges only if students have authorized this release.
